Prof. George Cole, Span 5355, Literatura y cultura afrocubanas: Este curso examinará la manera en que se representan las religiones afrocubanas dentro de los diferentes géneros literarios, el cine y la música popular. Además, se analizará cómo se ha ido modificando la visión de las mismas a lo largo de los diferentes períodos históricos desde la colonia hasta el exilio, brindando una visión panorámica de la evolución de dicha temática.

three novels from Spain, three from L.A. and
one Chicana writer.
Prof. Janet Pérez, La novela de la democracia, Monday 6:00 to 8:50 pm: The course will cover representatives of the several generations producing in the 1980s, 90s and incipient 21st century from "senior" canonical writers of the post-war era (representatives of "novela social") to "nueva novela," "novela postmoderna," and afterward, i.e., the strictly contemporary. There will be a course pack, and we will cover 10-12 novels, most of them relatively short.
Prof. Julián Pérez, SPAN 5374, Literatura hispanoamericana del siglo XIX: En este curso estudiaremos obras de poesía, narrativa y ensayo representativas de las literaturas hispanoamericanas escritas durante el siglo XIX. Incluiremos: Simón Bolívar, José M. de Heredia e Ignacio M. Altamirano, José Hernández, Juana M. Gorriti, Echeverría, Sarmiento y Juan Francisco Manzano. Nos aproximaremos a los textos desde una perspectiva multicultural, considerando las ideas políticas de la época, el papel de la mujer en la sociedad revolucionaria, la relación entre la cultura emergente hispanoamericana y la cultura europea, las relaciones raciales y la esclavitud, el papel de la poesía romántico-liberal en las sociedades revolucionarias, el problema del campo y la vida rural frente al desafío de la modernización.
Prof. Susan Isabel Stein, Spanish 5352, Methods of Literary Criticism, Tues/Thurs 2:30-3:50 pm: This course provides an introduction literary and cultural theory as tools for helping graduate students to create reading and writing strategies that will facilitate more systematic & profound analyses of various kinds of cultural texts--literature, politics, television & film, advertising, religion, history, etc. We will focus on some of the most important trends in literary/cultural criticism from the second half of the twentieth century.
