GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SPANISH

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA FOR SPANISH GRADUATE PROGRAM

The Spanish Graduate Faculty takes a holistic approach in evaluating applicants for admission to the MA and PhD programs. The focus of the evaluation will be the determination whether available evidence predicts that the applicant will succeed in completing the degree in a timely manner.


Requirements for admission to the MA Program in Spanish:
--a BA in Spanish or foreign equivalent, or appropriate undergraduate course work;
--minimum GRE required by the Graduate School (which does not apply for international students); cases in which linguistic or cultural bias has played a part in low scores may be considered;
--minimum 3.0 GPA in Spanish undergraduate courses and any graduate courses taken; 
--an academic writing sample;
--high-intermediate oral proficiency as determined by an interview with a faculty member; applicants may be required to take the ACTFL oral proficiency exam
--three letters of recommendation from former professors  and/or supervisors in Spanish-related employment.
Other considerations:
--the geographical location of the university or college where the student studied;
--relevant experience with Hispanic cultures, relevant work experience, or other activities that indicate a potential for success;
--needs for diversity in the program;
--any other factors relevant to the mission of the MA program.

Requirements for admission to the PhD Program in Spanish:
--an MA in Spanish or foreign equivalent, or in a related area;
--minimum GRE required by the Graduate School (which does not apply for international students); cases in which linguistic or cultural bias has played a part in low scores may be considered;
--above a 3.0 GPA in MA courses;
--an academic writing sample;
--three letters of recommendation from former graduate professors and/or supervisors in Spanish-related employment;
--advanced oral proficiency as determined by an interview with a faculty member; applicants may be required to take the ACTFL oral proficiency exam.
Other considerations:
--the geographical region of the university where the student earned the MA;
--relevant experience with Hispanic cultures, relevant work experience, or other activities that indicate a potential for success;
--needs for diversity in the program;
--any other factors relevant to the mission of the PhD program
